The Battle of Austerlitz was the zenith of Napoleon’s star which was fought December 2, 1805 (the first anniversary of his Coronation as Emperor of the French), and marked the climactic end of the War of the Third Coalition (August–December 1805). The Battle of Austerlitz is also known as the Battle of the Three Emperors, because Napoleon, Emperor Franz of Austria, and Alexander I were all present. This battle is seen as a tactical, decisive, and brutal masterpiece of the same stature as Cannae, the celebrated triumph by Hannibal some 2,000 years before.
Benjamin Howell has studied the Napoleonic Wars for the past 20 years and has previously presented to the Society on the Russian, Spanish / Iberian, and the Waterloo campaigns. The lecture will cover the Third Coalition and the penultimate destruction of it in less than 4 hours at Austerlitz.
